Obertauern Ski Season: Dates, Lift Hours and Season Windows

The quick version

Obertauern's published ski season runs from an expected November opening to late April, with daily lift hours of 9am to 4pm and all dates subject to snow.

Obertauern's season is easiest to plan when you separate two things that season pages often blend: the long winter window the resort publishes, and the daily lift operating day inside it. The winter window tells you when skiing is expected to be possible at all; the daily hours tell you what time you can actually ride. For most trips the single date that matters most is your arrival day, because a published season opening is a plan subject to snow rather than a guarantee that every lift and link will run.

Season dates as published

The operator publishes an expected season opening of 20 November 2026 for the 2026/27 winter, with the Tauernrunde expected to start on 26 November 2026 and full operation expected until 18 April 2027. A partial-operation window is then expected from 19 April 2027 to 2 May 2027, with the facilities affected still to be confirmed. Treat all of these as published expectations dependent on snow conditions rather than fixed commitments. Use them to bracket your trip, then check the Obertauern ski area pages closer to departure.

The gap between 20 November and 26 November matters if the Tauernrunde circuit is central to your plan: the resort opening and the link opening are separate published dates, and the link is explicitly subject to snow. If your trip falls in that early window, build in flexibility about whether the full circuit will be skiable. If you mainly want lifts turning and terrain open, the earlier date is the one to watch.

Daily lift hours in practice

Lifts operate daily from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, with Kirchbühellift and Achenrainbahn running until approximately 4:30 pm. Final inspection times are displayed at the individual lift stations, so the last upload can differ from the headline closing time. That wider window on those two lifts is useful if you want one more run late in the day, but it is not a general extension across the ski area.

Plan your skiing day around a 9:00 am start rather than an early first lift, and treat 4:00 pm as the practical end for most of the mountain. If you are returning to a specific base, check the final inspection time posted at that station; Kirchbühellift and Achenrainbahn run until roughly 4:30 pm, not the whole area. Arriving at a lift a few minutes before closing is not a reliable plan.

Ticket machines and pre-ski logistics

Ten ticket machines operate daily from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, and they issue passes valid from 2 hours up to 8 days as well as handling pick-up for passes bought online. Machines are located at valley stations including Grünwaldkopfbahn, Plattenkarbahn, Schaidbergbahn, Zehnerkarbahn, Seekarspitzbahn, Kehrkopfbahn and Gamsleitenbahn, plus the Übungslift. Ticket office hours are separate and listed in the operator's ticket office overview.

Buying online and using the pick-up function avoids the ticket desk queue, which is most useful on a first morning or a busy weekend. If you need a pass longer than 8 days, the machines are not the place to get it, so sort that out through the ticket office instead. Check the pass options before you commit.

What is conditional and what is scheduled

The Tauernrunde's first day and its end date are both published by the Obertauern ski area as subject to snow conditions, and the affected facilities during the spring partial-operation window have not been named. That means a published date tells you what the lift company intends, not which lifts will actually turn on your chosen day. Plan a trip around the season window, then treat individual lifts and links as confirmable rather than assumed.

Spring is the point where the distinction bites hardest: a resort-wide season can be running while only part of the network operates. If your trip falls in the partial-operation period, ask the Obertauern lift company which lifts and links are expected to run before you book accommodation and passes, since that is who publishes the season and slope-closure information.

Grooming closures and the shape of a ski day

Slopes close daily from 5:00 pm, or 6:30 pm, until 8:00 am for grooming, and no safety patrol is provided during that window. Grooming machinery and tensioned winch cables operate overnight, so the closure is not advisory. That gives you a hard boundary at the end of the day and a clear start the next morning.

The practical effect is that evening skiing sits outside normal lift hours and the published grooming closure, so do not plan a late session expecting lifts to run. If you arrive in the afternoon, a 2-hour pass bought from a machine before 4:30 pm can still be useful. When you are deciding between resorts, a comparable season structure helps.

Season edges and booking checks

Sponsored

Opening and closing weeks are where published plans most often shift, so check season dates and daily hours on the Obertauern ski area's pages before you commit to travel. Ask specifically whether the Tauernrunde is expected to run on your dates and which facilities are affected if you are travelling in the spring partial-operation window. Those two questions cover the biggest variables.

The Ski Opening Week is a separate event programme with concerts on 28 November and 4 December 2026, and it should not be read as the resort season opening date. The season opening comes from the Obertauern ski area, while the event week is organised separately by the Obertauern tourism association and ticketed through it. If your trip overlaps both, treat them as two schedules.

Plan Your Visit

Read Obertauern's season as a published winter window with a narrower daily operating day inside it: expect lifts from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, with two lifts running later, and slopes closed for grooming overnight. Book around the season window, then confirm the Tauernrunde and any spring partial-operation facilities before you travel. Treat every published date as a plan subject to snow rather than a guarantee. Before you book, check the Obertauern lift pass guide and the Obertauern piste map guide for the practical details.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the Obertauern ski season start and end?

Obertauern's expected opening is 20 November 2026, with expected full operation until 18 April 2027, followed by a partial-operation window expected from 19 April to 2 May 2027. All of these dates are snow-dependent plans, and the facilities affected in the spring window have not been confirmed. Check current details before you book.

What are the daily lift opening hours in Obertauern?

Lifts are published as running daily from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, with Kirchbühellift and Achenrainbahn until approximately 4:30 pm. Final inspection times are posted at the individual lift stations, so the last upload can vary. The daily hours are narrower than the season window and should be checked at the station you plan to use.

Is the Tauernrunde open from the first day of the season?

No. The resort opening and the Tauernrunde opening are separate published dates: the season is expected to open on 20 November 2026, while the circuit is expected to start on 26 November 2026 subject to snow. If the full circuit matters to your trip, plan around that later date. Confirm whether it is running before you commit.

Can I ski in Obertauern in the evening?

No. Slopes close daily from 5:00 pm, or 6:30 pm, until 8:00 am for grooming, and no safety patrol operates during that window. Evening skiing therefore sits outside normal lift hours and the published closure. Plan your skiing within the daily operating window and check final inspection times at your lift.
